FLIGHT CYCLE PHASES

Full Flight Deck Operational Progression

PHASE 01

Preflight Inspection & Walkaround

Fuel drains checked for water/debris, pitot cover removed, stall warning horn tested, oil level 6-8 quarts.

PHASE 02

Engine Start & Avionics Power-up

Master switch ON, beacon ON, throttle 1/4", mixture RICH, aux pump prime, starter engage, check oil pressure in 30s.

PHASE 03

Taxi & Engine Run-Up (1,800 RPM)

Magnetos check (drop < 150 RPM, diff < 50 RPM), suction gauge green, carb heat/mixture check, flaps set 10° for short field.

PHASE 04

Takeoff, Climb & Enroute Cruise

Full throttle (2,700 RPM), rotate at 55 kts, Vy climb at 74 kts, level off, lean mixture for best economy/power.

PHASE 05

Descent & Traffic Pattern Entry

Mixture rich, join 45° to downwind at 1,000 ft AGL, 80 kts downwind, flaps 10° base, flaps 20-30° final, Vref 65 kts.

PHASE 06

CHIEF INSTRUCTOR BRIEFING & OPERATIONAL NOTES

Trim is everything in the Skyhawk. Set trim accurately for 65 kts on final approach (flaps 30°), and the airplane will practically fly itself down the glideslope. Gently level off a foot above the runway and let the speed bleed off until the stall horn chirps at touchdown.

AIRCRAFT TRIVIA & HIGHLIGHTS
1FACT #1

The Cessna 172 is the most produced aircraft in aviation history, with over 44,000 units built since its first flight in 1955.

2FACT #2

In 1958, two pilots flew a Cessna 172 continuously for 64 days, 22 hours, and 19 minutes without landing, refueling from a moving truck on a desert road!

3FACT #3

Known as the ultimate flight trainer, more commercial airline captains completed their first solo flight in a Cessna 172 than in any other airplane.
